After you have decided you want to study abroad, the next step is to figure out if you could do it from a financial aspect. There are a lot of expenses when you are studying abroad, from accommodation, transportation, living expenses, any traveling you want to do abroad, and souvenirs. There are also fees you need to pay before you can go such as visa fees. You may also need to pay a healthcare surcharge to receive healthcare while you are abroad. One thing that is certain is that if you want to study abroad you have to work for it. That means saving and making enough money to make your dream a reality. This article lists some ways you can make or save money to study abroad.
Make Money
- Get a second job
- Do projects for Cash (yard work/painting/manual labor)
- Host a Rummage Sale
- Sell things you don’t need anymore
- Sell crafts that you make
- Ask for money for studying abroad instead of holiday or birthday presents
- Apply for every scholarship – be sure to read the terms to make sure they can be used at an international university
- Pick up extra hours at work
- Get a higher paying job or ask for a performance based raise
- Become a tutor for younger students
- Apply for student loans

Save Money
- Start saving as early as possible
- Make a monthly budget – that includes how much you will save each month
- Cut down your expenses where possible (ex. Netflix or magazine subscriptions)
- Pack lunches instead of eating at the cafeteria
- Get a roommate to cut your rent in half
- Do more DIY projects instead of buying new
- Get thrifty – when you have to buy things check the thrift shop first
- Make your own laundry detergent or dish soap
- Cut down on food waste – only buy what you know you will eat
- Go out less (cut down on food and alcohol spending)
